Hall of light.

This is a portfolio project I did under the duration of 5 weeks, half time in school and on my spare time at home.
I wanted to make something with contrast from the work I have done in the past.
The goal was to create a warm hallway with natural lights and a happy and inviting mood.
Then also put in some storytelling of what might be happening there.

First I made a concept that I then mixed with some self directed art direction.

Concept:

I wanted to combine my concept with the hall of mirrors (photo from wikipedia)

I learned a lot from this project.

Keeping track on planning and re planning if things don't turn out they way I think.

Distributing geometry, We have learned in school to kept things as lowpoly as possible for performance. But during this project I have been starting to rethink that. And use the geometry where it counts and not being to afraid to keep things higher if needed.

Keeping it simple with the light and fake bounce and translucent like if you can't find another way to do it.

Material saturation and value. Keeping the albedo more PBR correct will help the lighting a lot.

Keeping things snapping to the grid earlier so the modularity is figured out at the start of the project.

Progression:

Matpainting for the background.
This and a lot more.

Marble

Marble has intrigued me ever seance I studied faux painting. It was one of the first things I ever made in substance and is still fun to do.
Its the first time I play around with decals in unreal as well and footprints felt something that could work well with the marble.
The marbles are for a scene I'm currently working on and the deadline is next week.

Starting the portfolio projects.

It's a time for experimentation, but also "just" producing the best work you ever created.
It feels so strange to start the countdown to the internship searching, but its just around the corner (10 april).

My goal until then is to create at least one large environment with plenty of atmosphere and story. After that, an interior witch displays modules and building with a texture atlas.

This might change.
I want atleast three projects in my portfolio and maybe one place only with textures.

Here is a start on a sand material I'm working on at home.

2 week foliage workflow.

Vertex painting the different layers of bark to make the trees look unique and adding some wind.

The workflow I tried out was maya paint fx to make the trunk and branches of the trees and then highpoly leaves and branches in Zbrush.
Then baking the highpolys down to planes and using them as leaves in paint fx. The grass and bushes are also done with paint fx baked down to planes. This helped my to make different variations of trees and grass quick but it needed alot of tweaking of values to get it good.

Then making the bark materials in Substance Designer and using vertex painting with heightblend to blend them. Also using one more channel of the vertex paint to add some different colors to the white parts of the bark.

Readability.

One of the most important things to make they eye investigate the image.
The initial read of the Tomb image was too low key. While squinting the there is no contrast or compostion to read and it was abit to satureted green.
I want more light and more contrast for the eye to move around in the scene.
Also having some different edges is interesting, so I added more dust and smoke along the floor to break that up.

Tomb finished.

After 3 weeks on half time, I am done with the Tomb.
I learned a lot from this project, like thinking more about texel density earlier and locking down cameras for beauty shots during the blockout to be able to focus on the right details and composition elements.

I had a lot of nice feedback and help from great alumni from my school. Thank you!

Next week its on to a new project.
